Google Pixel Fold design, specifications leaked ahead of expected launch in May 2023

New renders and design details for the long-rumored Google Pixel Fold have surfaced online, including display sizes and overall dimensions, as well as an expected spring launch date.

According to the fixed dropout OnLeaks (Across how to solve), previous rumors were correct in claiming that the Google Pixel Fold would adopt a similar form factor to the Oppo Find N. An internal 2-inch and right-aligned selfie camera are housed in a slightly thicker frame. Samsung-built OLED panels are said to feature an Ultra Thin Cover Glass (UTG), also supplied by Samsung.

The screen sizes are said to be housed in a round-edge body and measure approximately 158.7 x 139.7 x 5.7mm when opened, making it marginally wider than the Oppo Find N and about the same height, but with a slightly larger camera bump with an 8.3. mm thickness.

The camera bump on the back side of the screen, reminiscent of Google’s latest Pixel phones, contains a three-lens bar with flash and microphone, while the SIM tray is located at the bottom edge of the external screen. The USB-C port sits directly across from the fold. The volume buttons are located on the right edge along with the power button which is equipped with a fingerprint scanner.

Previous rumors indicated that the Pixel Fold will be powered by Google’s Tensor G2 chip processor and come with at least 12GB of RAM. It will likely run Android 13. The starting price is expected to be $1,799, with black and silver color options available when the device launches in May 2023.

Google’s foldable has been around for a long time. Documents leaked in 2020 indicated that Google plans to launch a foldable smartphone in late 2021, but this did not happen. Google didn’t even mention foldable devices at its recent I/O developer conference, which left some Pixel fans wondering if the device was ever canned.

In 2019, when Google revealed that it was developing technology that could be used in a foldable device, it simultaneously admitted that it did not see a “clear use case yet”. However, Ross Young, an analyst who specializes in Well-connected Supply Chain Supply Chain (DSCC), said it’s more likely that new software innovations or chipsets will emerge that Google wants to integrate. Turn off the device.

Meanwhile, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold and Flip devices have made their way into the emerging market, and Google is catching up. Where that leaves Apple is unclear. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the company’s long-rumored foldable iPhone is unlikely to launch until 2025 or later. Apple’s first foldable device may be a hybrid iPhone‌ and iPad‌, or simply a foldable iPad‌.

If or when a foldable game comes along, Apple’s long game has let it watch and learn. Early foldable devices had a long list of issues with screen quality and durability, which probably explains why Apple hasn’t yet released a foldable device of its own.
