To celebrate Marvel icon Stan Lee’s 100th birthday, Disney+ has released a trailer indicating that Marvel is about to release a documentary focusing on one of the comics industry’s most influential characters. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a documentary about Stan Lee will air on Disney+ in 2023.
The late Marvel Comics visual is admired by comics fans everywhere, so it was only a matter of time before a documentary was made about it. With Disney owning the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Stan Lee’s image, it’s no surprise that the entertainment company is producing the highly anticipated documentary. To announce the upcoming project, Marvel posted a trailer for the Stan Lee documentary on their Instagram account.
The entertainment company commented on the video, “100 years of dreaming. 100 years of creativity. 100 years of Stan Lee.”
As epic string music plays, the trailer slowly zooms out as the screen flashes through several of Stan Lee’s iconic Marvel movies. The documentary will be a way for Marvel to celebrate Stan Lee’s life and the contributions he’s made to the comic book universe and movies based on his characters.
Lee was a legendary comic book writer, editor, publisher, and producer. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a testament to Stan Lee’s prolific legacy, as Lee has co-created many quintessential comic book characters, such as Spider-Man, Iron Man, Fantastic Four, Black Panther, Hulk, Thor, and X- Men, Silver Surfer, Nick Fury, Ant-Man and many more.
Before Marvel, there was Timely Comics, where Stan Lee began working as an editor in 1939. As Lee climbed his way up the corporate ladder, the company renamed the company Marvel, and Stan Lee eventually landed the title of publisher in 1972. After more than 30 years After a year in the comic book industry, Lee became the face of the company, even though he was just beginning to build his legacy.
As an inspiration to comic book readers around the world, when Hollywood started making films about Marvel characters, Stan Lee gained a whole new fan base. His characters were no longer confined to the pages of the comic book, but as the MCU exploded, characters like Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Ant-Man became part of popular culture, and Stan Lee joined the ranks with them. The writer and publisher has become endearingly popular due to his brief but hilarious appearances in every Marvel movie.
Stan Lee passed away at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles in November 2018 at the age of 95. After his death, Disney CEO Bob Iger told Marvel fans that Stan Lee was a superhero, just like his characters. Egger also said that the only thing bigger than Lee’s imagination was his tender heart.
Marvel’s Stan Lee documentary likely won’t be the last we see on screen. Earlier this year, Marvel signed a 20-year deal with Genius Brands International and POW! That gave the studio rights to Lee’s likeness in movies, TV shows, and even appearances in Disney theme parks. What else Disney and Marvel have up with the Stan Lee likeness, we’ll have to wait and see.
