Will Smith cries as he talks about what his young nephew asked him after the Oscar slap

Will Smith tearfully recalls the moment his 9-year-old nephew asked him why he slapped comedian Chris Rock during the Oscars broadcast, saying The Daily ShowTrevor Noah had to ‘forgive’ [himself] For being human.”

Smith shocked the world in March after he walked on stage and slapped Rock in the face during Rock’s Best Documentary Feature screening. The slap was in response to a rocker’s joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head, which she has been shaving since 2021 due to alopecia areata.

Smith returned to his seat and shouted profanities at Rock, who responded briefly, but continued his show without further interruption. But the rest of the ceremony was overshadowed by the incident, including the moment when Smith won Best Actor for his performance in the film King Richard.

Smith issued an apology the day after the incident and resigned his membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). In the end, he was banned from attending Academy events for 10 years.

Rock declined to press charges.

He spoke during his latest press release to promote his starring role on Apple TV+ ReleaseSmith said the incident capped off a “horrible night” when he “just lost her”.

Smith said his nephew’s reaction to seeing him slap Rock on stage broke his heart:

“We came home, and he had stayed up late to see his Uncle Will. We’re sitting in my kitchen, and he’s on my lap holding his Oscar.”

And he’s like, ‘Why did you hit that Uncle Will guy? “

Smith also spoke in more detail about what prompted him to hit rock that night:

“It was a terrible night, as you can imagine. You know, there are many nuances and complexities to that, but at the end of the day, I just lost it.”

“It was a lot of things. It was the little boy who watched his father beat his mother and, you know, it all explodes… That’s not what I want to be.”

He also admitted that his actions likely hurt his prize chances ReleaseIt is his first film since the accident.

“These great artists in the world have done some of the best work of their careers. The idea that they could be disenfranchised because of me is like…”

“This is killing me.”

Smith’s confessions received a largely negative response online.

Smith’s comments mark the first time he has spoken at length about the incident since he was banned from Academy events.

Later, Noah thanked Smith for speaking so bluntly, adding that he did not want Smith to be defined by “the greatest amount of bullshit”. Smith replied that he had to “forgive myself for being human” and said “No one hates the fact that I am more human than I am”.

Smith went on to say that he “always wanted to be Superman” and “saved the damsel in distress”. However, he admitted that he made a mistake and still had opportunities to “go out into the world and contribute in a way that fills my heart and that I hope will help others.”
