Apple Seeds releases iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2 Release Candidates

Apple today provided developers with candidate versions of the upcoming versions of iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2 updates for testing purposes, as the beta releases come less than a week after Apple launched the fourth beta of iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2.

Registered developers can download iOS 16‌.2 and iPadOS 16.2 profiles from the Apple Developer Center, and once installed, the beta is available over the air.

Today RC is introducing optional end-to-end encryption for additional iCloud features, with the feature available to all US users with the launch of iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2. Advanced Data Protection for ‌iCloud‌ adds end-to-end encryption for ‌iCloud‌ backups, notes, photos, iCloud Drive, and more. With Advanced Data Protection enabled, the only iCloud categories not covered by end-to-end encryption include iCloud Mail, Contacts, and Calendar.

iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2 include the Freeform app, which can be used to take notes, sketch, doodle, brainstorm, create mood boards, and more. Multiple people can work on the same freeform canvas, with changes synced to all participants in real time.

For the iPad, iPadOS 16.2 brings external display support for the Stage Manager multitasking feature, allowing up to eight apps to be used simultaneously. External display support is available for the M1 and M2 ‌iPad‌ models.

Apple added a new Home App architecture coming in iOS and iPadOS 16.2, which Apple says is designed to deliver faster and more reliable performance, especially in homes with lots of smart home accessories. The new build requires HomePod 16.2 beta software, and causes the Home app to not work with devices updated to iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, or macOS Ventura 13.1.

Unintended emergency SOS calls can be reported to Apple in iOS 16.2, there’s a new sleep widget, live sports scores are back for the TV app, there are always-on display changes on the iPhone 14 Pro, and more, with full details available in the iOS feature guide.
