How to find lost iPhone

Recently, my mother-in-law shared a story with me about how she lost her iPhone while she and my father-in-law were away from home. She hit a snag realizing she couldn’t remember the password to help locate her missing phone.

She wrote it miles away at home and she knew enough to go home to look up her password and then log into her iCloud account and click the “Find My” icon.

There is a much easier way to activate the Find My iPhone feature to locate the lost device faster by following these tips. The key here is to prepare in advance.

How to find your iPhone

If you hang out a lot with a file friend or family Member, do the following now if you lose your iPhone later.

4) After clicking on “help a friend” click on the little blue text that says “Use a different Apple IDSign in to iCloud with your Apple ID username and password. Your Apple ID is the same ID you used to initially set up your phone. You usually need this ID to download apps to your phone.

5) After entering your password, you will notice Prompt at the bottom of the screen to save the username and password to your friend or family member’s phone. Go ahead and save it to your friend/family member’s phone. By doing this, you’re setting up that other device to be able to quickly access the Find My feature so you can try to get your phone back.

6) After entering your username and password, you will be able to locate the lost device and perform a variety of tasks. Once you have identified the device you want to locate, you can do the following:

  • Audio playback: This will play a sound on your lost device. You should know if your iPhone is dead, not connected to cellular WiFi or online, it won’t play a sound until it connects again.
  • Missing mode: Once selected, select “Activate” or “Enable”. You will then be asked to enter your contact information to display it on your lost device. You can also enter your own message to ask the finder to contact you. Then make sure that “Activate” is selected.
  • Erase iPhone: This should be a last resort option as it cannot be reverted. Select the device you want, and then you can click on Erase this device. Note that if your phone is backed up in iCloud, you can restore this information on a new iPhone later. And if you’re lucky enough to be covered by optional AppleCare+ with theft and loss, you don’t have to wipe your device. Alternatively, file a claim for an iPhone replacement here.

7) After taking this test, you can sign out of iCloud on your trusted friend or family member’s account.

5) Once you are logged in, you should be able to see where your phone is and ping it

6) Make sure you log out of the phone you borrowed.

3) Hold this button until the ping sounds loud and you find your phone.
