Taking sick days apparently wasn’t the norm on the set of Netflix’s “Wednesday,” as actress Gina Ortega revealed that she filmed a scene with others despite having COVID-19 symptoms. The news, which stemmed from an NME interview with Ortega in November, is now gaining momentum online thanks to the recent backlash.
The idea that Ortega could potentially be a supervillain first came to mind when The music magazine reported a viral moment from the teen drama, in which Wednesday’s character (Ortega) does an odd dance around a group of extras.

The jerky jive quickly became a hit on TikTok, and users started imitating it on the platform.
“I designed it myself!” Ortega told NME last month. “It’s crazy because it was my first day with COVID so the shoot was horrible.”
After the lecturer expressed her shock at the comment, she continued: “Yeah, I woke up and… I had body aches. I felt like I had been hit by a car and a little goblin had been released into my throat and was scratching the walls of my esophagus. They were giving me medicine between takes because we were waiting for the positive result.”

NME notes that MGM, the production company behind “Wednesday,” told the magazine that “strict COVID protocols were followed and as soon as the positive test was confirmed, production removed Gina from the set.”
It is unclear if the decision to continue filming came directly from Ortega or at the behest of others. But The fact that she had exposed her colleagues to the disease sparked debates about the film industry and rave culture—a kind of “performance workaholism,” as the New York Times reported. Once, working hard for many hours is seen as a measure of success.
On Twitter, people reacted to the news with bewilderment, concern and anger.
“Gina Ortega proudly talked about how she contracted the virus while filming a dance scene, which really wasn’t as flexible as she thought it would be,” she said. wrote one user.

Gina Ortega Filming Entire Scene While Waiting For Her Covid Test Results And With Clear Symptoms It’s Not ‘Professional’ It’s Completely Irresponsible
This is a bad thing right? We all agree this isn’t some ‘perseverance through hardship’ moment, which is why the girl wasn’t sent home, she could get horribly ill or infect others kind of pic.twitter.com/dBlwOf2ulr

According to her, she was waiting for the results when they shot, when the results came in she was sent home, but tbh I don’t understand why she didn’t stay home waiting for the result instead of risking contaminating people??
As someone who works in production, hearing her *on set* with Covid is terrifying! There are presumably safety measures in place that should prevent that, so the fact that she was forced to film possibly sick, without a mask, in close proximity to the cast and crew, is concerning.
I was disappointed to learn that Gina Ortega had COVID symptoms in place, but was still allowed to film a dance scene Wednesday while she waited for her positive test result. I wonder how many people got sick? And how many people did these people get sick?
