R. Kelly Survivor says he blasted her for discovering a high-quality bar

in time When the true crime genre hits its creative nadir, as streaming services produce assembly line products that prioritize shock value over victims’ stories — and even veer off paying offenders for exclusive access — Surviving R. Kelly standing out.

Premiering in January 2019, Dream Hampton’s docuseries paints a damning picture of the R&B legend’s style over decades of grooming and abuse through interviews with survivors, journalists, workers, and eyewitnesses. The Lifetime show was a Greek choir of grief that not only condemned Kelly, but an industry that went to great lengths to protect him, and a media and public that turned horrifying child rape allegations into comedic fodder. I also got results. Thanks to the relentless efforts of Hampton, as well as journalist (and documentary subject) Jim DeRogatis, the public finally turned on Robert Sylvester Kelly, and authorities in New York City, Chicago, and Minneapolis opened new cases against him. After his trial in New York, Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison for racketeering and sex trafficking. He faces additional sentences in Chicago and pending charges in Minnesota.

Surviving R. Kelly: The Final Chapter, the four-part finale of the Hampton documentary series, will air on consecutive nights—January 2 and 3—on Lifetime. It contains a host of new discoveries, including a survivor who was allegedly raped by Kelly within days of his marriage to 15-year-old Aaliyah; Other survivors who say they experienced violence after appearing in the document; And the Rolling Stone Editor Jason Newman, who is praised by Kelly survivor Kitty Jones.

The docuseries also features the testimony of a new survivor, Ebony Doyle, who sat down to interview Hampton and her team in November 2021.

“I was 16 when I met Rob in 1993. My friends and I went to a show, and he was there with other artists, and I just remember his voice was amazing,” she recalls in the doc. “After the show, my boyfriend and I were waiting outside, we were ready to go to our cars, and a limo pulled up.”

She says Kelly nodded from the limo and invited them both to his hotel room, and that’s how Doyle found herself under his thumb.

“Rob used to … have the tour bus sitting outside my high school, waiting for me to come out. He was at my high school graduation. It was very involved,” she recalls.

When Doyle’s mother discovered her daughter had been seeing Kelly against her wishes, she kicked the teen out of the house. So, after she graduated from high school, she moved in with Kelly. Then things took an even more disturbing turn.

According to Doyle, Kelly was “really in control…certain things sexually he liked his way.” For example, she didn’t know how to arch her back to his liking, so Kelly had her sit still with her back arched for “actual hours,” and trained the camera on her to make sure she held it.

“He was even taking breaks,” she confirms in the document. “He would come back and check me to see if I was still in the same position, and at the same time hold the camera to see if I was moving when he told me not to. He wanted to groom me to be the person he wanted me to be for him — Just for him.”

When Doyle’s producer asked if she was aware of his affair with an underage Aaliyah, she recalls hearing people in Kelly’s inner circle “talking about Rob and Aaliyah”, and that she would regularly ask him what was going on between him and Aaliyah “and he would deny it”.

While touring with Kelly, Doyle says she began to realize there were some physical similarities between her and Aaliyah, and now believes it was “like a body double to her.”

In the end, Doyle claims that while she was living at Kelly’s house, she found shocking evidence of Kelly’s predation of Alya.

“I see this basket full of tapes, and I’m like, ‘Okay, maybe I’ll grab one of these tapes, and let me go into the other rooms and see if there’s video so I can watch a movie,'” she says, “because I was bored.” “That’s when I found out he was lying to me about Aaliyah.”

And she continues: “The tape that I put was of him and Alia together. What I saw on this tape is that he and Alia are intimate. They were on the tour bus, and everything I asked was confirmed on the tape.” (Survivor Kelly/back-up dancer Jovante Cunningham also says she witnessed him rape Alia on his tour bus.)

Kelly returns home and, as Doyle says, a confrontation ensues over the tape’s contents.

He’s standing face to face with me like, ‘What have you been doing? ‘ I was terrified,’ she recalls, as Kelly shook her.

Kelly says and then “he pushed me down the stairs.”

“That shaking sent me down the stairs, and I just lay there. I just froze. That was the moment I realized [how] To pick and choose battles.”

Later in the interview, Doyle asked the producer for a tissue to wipe her tears, then motioned to her friend off camera for help.

Like, I loved him… I love him [Kelly]. It is still important to me. And so, he’s not a terrible guy to me. And I don’t want people to think that,” Doyle told her boyfriend. “I just hope he gets the help he needs. Like, he’s not a bad person, he just does bad things. Does that make [sense]? “

“he is configured her friend replied. “I was touched. You were 16 years old.”

Doyle pauses to collect herself. “I know.”

Despite his alleged abuse, Doyle says she continued her relationship with Kelly, even appearing in his music video for “Playa’s Only” mid-terms, but began to distance herself from the predator after witnessing his treatment of her eldest daughter, who was then Age 12 at the time. As Doyle says, she and her young daughter went to get McDonald’s with Kelly in his car, and he started “looking at my daughter in the backseat, in the rear-view mirror, with the weirdest look on his face, and it freaked me out.”

She never brought her two daughters around Kelly again.
