Diablo IV will be released on June 6, 2023, as announced in a new trailer that debuted during The Game Awards. This official announcement came shortly after a report documenting the challenges Blizzard employees faced over the course of the game’s development, which mentioned the release date.
The Washington Post reported that Diablo IV was scheduled to arrive in April 2023, but the team “felt it needed more time and was able to agree on a June date”. However, there is still work to be done on Diablo IV, with the Post reporting that while not required, the development team is motivated to work long hours and “crunch” on the project due to the various equity bonuses that will be paid out once Diablo IV releases. It depends at least in part on performance.
According to a Blizzard employee quoted in the article, Blizzard is “not willing to delay the game any longer”, so the team will have to “figure out how much we’re willing to hurt ourselves to make sure the game launches in a good enough state”. An internal company email from November sent to the Diablo IV team acknowledged that the development team is “moving into a period where some people may be putting in some extra hours.”
Blizzard has sought additional help getting Diablo IV across the finish line in the form of Activision-owned developer Vicarious Visions, now known as Blizzard Albany. However, the merger process has been described as bumpy, resulting in duplicate work, according to the paper.
Blizzard is expected to officially announce the release date of Diablo IV at the Game Awards. In a recent hands-on preview of Diablo IV, we said the upcoming ARPG looks “on the right track” and lives up to “its promise of giving players much more agency than before in how they play and build their favorite characters.”
