The latest Tesla electric car models now run on steam. And by that, of course, we mean that vehicular central consoles can now access and play thousands of titles from Valve’s popular Steam gaming platform.

The new addition, which is part of Tesla’s 2022.44.25.1 “Holiday Update,” is currently only available on Tesla’s “new” high-end S and X models released in 2022, each with 16GB of onboard RAM (at least Although CEO and founder Elon Musk I promised in a tweet that “retrofitting” will be available for older models). The release notes for the update indicate that these vehicles should be able to run any game that has been verified by Valve for play on the company’s Steam Deck portable platform.

The list of verified games currently includes more than 6,000 titles that run on deck through SteamOS, most of which use a compatibility layer to run Windows-encoded games on the Arch Linux-based system. We imagine the expanded list of games listed as “playable” on the Steam Deck will also work in Teslas, though users may run into some specific issues with the interface with such titles.

Verified Deck games currently target a stable minimum of 30 FPS on the Steam Deck’s 7-inch screen, 1280 x 800 resolution. On the other hand, the 17-inch center console of 2022 Teslas can support resolutions up to 2200 x 1300. Thus, individual game settings may need to be tweaked slightly to get the most out of the “10 teraflops of computing power” that AMD boasts. For Tesla RYZEN APUs.

Tesla’s new Steam integration supports Bluetooth wireless controllers and even mouse/keyboard setups, Musk He tweeted on Tuesday night. Users can also download their own cloud storage files to the vehicle to capture games played on other devices.

The trip to the toy car

Full Steam support for Teslas is the biggest step in a long journey that began when Musk put out a call to game developers for Tesla-based ports in 2018. Since then, Tesla’s center console display has added support for a few dozen console games ported, starting with cuphead in 2019 and run through high-quality titles such as The Witcher III: Wild Hunt And the Cyberpunk 2077 movie (The last one that was Used to show Steam support in a promotional tweet).

Back in February, though, Musk signaled a change in Tesla’s game porting strategy, saying the company was “working through the general case of getting Steam games to work on Tesla for select titles.” musk He said in July That the company is “making progress with Steam integration,” which led to an update to Steam support Tuesday on late-model Teslas.

Last year, a Tesla update added a controversial feature that allows supported games to be played even while the car is in motion. The move sparked a wide-ranging investigation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, causing Tesla to back off and once again limit play to the car’s parking time.
