The Destiny 2: Lightfall trailer had one of the brightest moments at The Game Awards

If video games have taught us anything over the past few years, it’s that grappling hooks are the most exciting new feature you can add to the franchise.

Destiny 2: Lightfall, the MMO expansion for 2023, will allow Guardians to swing on the grappling hook with new Strand powers, which Bungie originally revealed back in August. But in the expansion’s latest trailer, which debuted at The Game Awards 2023, gamers got to witness some grappling hook gameplay that confirmed Guardians can handle anything — even their fellow Guardians.

About thirty seconds into the new trailer, once the pretty cinematic moments are over, we see the Thundercrash Titan take off with a Super. Now, for starters, Thundercrash is a super add-in Destiny 2: Daredevil, which causes Titan to turn their bodies into a rocket, literally allowing them to fly through the air until they hit something. Super is nothing new, but the Hunters are using their struggles to take a ride on Thundercrash.

Bungie knows how to make a flashy trailer, and this moment takes the cake. The Thundercrash Titan slithers towards a group of enemies and the Hunter can fly through the air with them. When the duo lands, they both start kicking ass together, and we even see the hunter grapple with an opposing cabal and perform some kind of melee execution on them.

Rodeo Hunter is definitely the highlight of the trailer, but there are plenty of interesting tidbits and potential vibes hidden in there (plus we get plenty of shots of the gorgeous Newmona destination).

Twenty seconds into the trailer, we see Hunter crash to the ground. When they land, all of the cables around them are lifted into the air and remain suspended. We see this same effect later in the trailer where a handful of Cabal – trapped by the Strand – float around Warlock standing in the rift.

During the gunplay section, starting at 23 seconds into the trailer, we see Titan shoot what appear to be green bullets from a new gun. Green lead may not look out of place in a file Destiny 2 trailer, but the color of the bullet usually matches the color of the weapon element. It took nearly a year to obtain Legendary Stasis weapons in an era beyond the lightbut that makes it seem like the Guardians will get their hands on the Strand Weapons almost immediately lightfall. Shortly after the Thundercrash clip, we also see Titan pop a towering barrier, causing a massive blade to slash in front of them, hunting for nearby Cabal targets.

Just shy of the minute mark, we’re seeing all three classes overshadow the new Strand Supers, which we’ve seen so often before. However, this trailer seems to confirm that Titan’s new super-hands are a roaming super-ability – something Titan players are already familiar with. The Hunter Rope-Dart Super appears to have a massive swing radius, allowing the Guardian to slice through a bunch of cables with ease, and the Warlock Super summons a bunch of guided missiles from thin air.

The remainder of the trailer focuses mostly on the story and cinematic moments, rather than the gameplay. However, we see Titan punch him through a glass window in the back half of the trailer. This animation mirrors many of the other shoulder charge abilities Giants have access to, and is likely a melee option for Strand.

The trailer is filled with several other catchy moments worth mentioning. If you’re interested in a longer breakdown, we recommend checking out our Aztecross analysis video.
